The Passport Office, Visakhapatnam was opened in January, 1997 after bifurcating from the Regional Passport Office, Hyderabad to serve the people of the five north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh viz.,
The office was fully computerized in 1999 by the National Informatics Centre, M/o communications and Information Technology, Govt. of India. The present office is located in a rented building which is very close to railway station and bus complex. It comprises of 3 floors with an approximate carpet area of 7500 Sq. ft. The Passport Office, Visakhapatnam is primarily responsible for issuance of Indian Passports to the Citizens of India who are residing within its jurisdictional area. In addition to issue of passports, various other miscellaneous services like change of address in passport, additional endorsement regarding Emigration Check Not Required, Police Clearance Certificate, inclusion of spouse' name etc. are also being rendered by this office irrespective of the fact whether the original passport is issued by Passport Office, Visakhapatnam or not, provided they stay in the area of jurisdiction of Passport Office, Visakhapatnam. The Passport Office, Visakhapatnam received the 'Uttam Passport Office' award for the year 2000-01 from the Minister of State for External Affairs. Special Features: Special Counters: Various special counters have been setup at Passport Office. For instance, special counters are there for ladies, senior citizens, physically handicapped persons, enquiry counters and for tatkaal scheme. Facilitation Counter: For the benifit of passport applicants, the Passport Office has set up a facilitation counter manned by ex-servicemen and physically challenged persons. The following services are provided at these counters for a nominal prescribed fee.
Display Boards: The general information is prominently displayed on display boards in English, Hindi and Telugu for the benefit of applicants. Tele-enquiry: Interactive voice response based tele-enquiry system (Tel. 2513894) is operative in this Office. This helps the public to a great extent and reduces a lot of inconvenience by providing general information and online status enquiry to the applicants. Speed-Post: All the Passports are being dispatched to the addressees by speed post so as to reach the applicant within 24 hours where speed post facility is available and to all other places passports are being dispatched by registered post only. Computerization: Processing of applications in this office has been fully computerized by the National Informatics Centre, right from accepting fees at the counters till the dispatch of the passports. All reports, statements, reference letters are generated from computers, Status enquiry of fresh/miscellaneous cases are readily available on computer. The passport office has also introduced Machine Readable Passports in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) introduced on the passport booklet makes it easier for passport holders to clear immigration checks. The Data, photograph and signature would be printed on these booklets through computer and special printers, which would make them tamper proof. Overall computerization has made the processing of the applications simple, accurate and fast.
